Your brain, desperate for order, stitches the ends together like a child taping the edges of a rainbow. The wheel is a lie. But, a beautiful, necessary lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of us see deeper into the illusion. Tetrachromats\u2014individuals with a rare genetic quirk\u2014perceive 100 million hues, a kaleidoscope the rest of us can\u2019t fathom. Bees dance in ultraviolet, seeing patterns on flowers we\u2019ll never spot. Meanwhile, most mammals live in a washed-out world of blues and yellows. Color is not equal. It\u2019s a rigged game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what\u2019s the takeaway for all of us artists? Our palette isn\u2019t just pigment. It\u2019s neurology. Red isn\u2019t \u201cpassionate\u201d because of physics\u2014it\u2019s passionate because our brain maps it to danger, desire, and the thudding of your own heart. Blue isn\u2019t \u201ccalm\u201d because of wavelengths\u2014it\u2019s the color of distance, the sky that never touches the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next time you paint, remember: You\u2019re not mixing colors. You\u2019re hacking into our brains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
